Workington AFC produced a battling performance to beat Prescot Cables on Saturday at the IP Truck Parts Stadium.
However, Cables would have felt aggreived that their efforts were in vain as their performance was much better than the two-nil scoreline suggests.
The visitors took the lead on 26 minutes when Connor Tinnion ran beyond the back four to fire home under Ollie Taylor.
The match developed into a war of attrition as the home side battled to get back into the game and the visitors sought to maintain their advantage. Prescot thought they had equalised on 42 minutes when Josh Klein-Davies headed Matty Hamilton’s excellent cross into the net, only to then turn and see that the assistant referee had raised his flag for offside.
If truth be told, neither goalkeeper was seriously tested in the second half as Workington were able to break down the home sides attacks and frustrate Cables in midfield areas.
As Cables pushed for an equaliser in the dying seconds of the game, the visitors grabbed their second goal to seal the win. A rapid counter-attack helped Brad Hubbold to beat the offside trap, the substitute placing his shot into the far corner of Taylor’s goal.
Cables XI: Taylor, Fernandes, McCulloch, Cooper, Edgar, Turner, Gregory, Myler (Jackson 26), Hamilton, Klein-Davies, Dean
