Cables secured what turned out to be a comfortable 2-0 victory against local rivals City of Liverpool at the IP Truck Parts stadium.
The Pesky Bulls took the lead in the 13th minute through James Edgar. The Cables midfielder curled a delightful left-footed free kick into the top corner of Owen Wheeler’s goal.
The home side then missed two good opportunities to extend their lead on 33 and 36 minutes. Firstly, Matty Hamilton saw his excellent volley saved low down to Wheeler’s left. Then, Josh Klein-Davies found himself clean through on goal but again was unable to beat Wheeler.
Half time saw Cables go in 1-0 up with Ollie Taylor relatively untroubled in the Cables goal.
The second half was a more attritional affair until the introduction of Michael Monaghan and Jordan Southworth. The substitutes combined to win Cables a penalty on 83 minutes, only for Monaghan to see his spot kick saved well by the excellent Wheeler.
Monaghan would not have to wait long to redeem himself; in the 90th minute he was put through and fired low beneath Wheeler to give Cables all three points.
