On This Day: Prescot reach Cup Final

The Liverpool Senior Cup

Having reached four consecutive Liverpool Senior Cup Finals, Prescot Cables has become synonymous with the County Cup in recent years.  But on 24th April 1890, Prescot Football Club reached the final of the Liverpool Junior Cup by winning the second replay of their semi-final against Saltney.

In the late 19th Century, the Junior Cup was one of only two competitions run by the Liverpool County FA, so to reach the Final was a major achievement. For Prescot, this was doubly so in 1890, for they took on their own Reserve Team – the Swifts – in the deciding tie.

That facilitated entry into the Senior Cup for the following season, starting a journey that has led to some memorable occasions.

The club’s early adventures in the Liverpool FA competitions have been examined by Roy McDonald in a fascinating article.

Roy’s piece is just one of our ever-expanding collection of Long Reads, which are perfect for breaking the boredom of lockdown.  This includes the Cables Greats profiles of notable players – check back tomorrow at 3:00pm for the next instalment of that series.
