Cables were made to work hard in the second half of their opening Pitching In Northern Premier League match against Kendal Town, eventually running out 2-0 victors over the Mintcakes at the IP Truck Parts Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
A maximum-permitted capacity crowd of 400 people saw Cables take the lead in the 6th minute. MJ Monaghan receiving the ball from James Edgar’s quickly taken free kick. The Cables number 10 quickly shifted the ball out of his feet and curled a right-footed shot that was heading for the top corner of the Kendal net from the moment it left his foot.
Cables continued to dominate the first half and could have been two goals up soon after taking the lead when Dale Korie-Butler headed against the bar. Monaghan was fouled by Kendal’s goalkeeper midway through the first half, but the resulting penalty was a poor one and was comfortably collected by the Mintcakes stopper.
As it was the Pesky Bulls went into the break one nil up after dominating proceedings and restricting the visitors to just a single shot on goal.
The second half was a far more turgid affair and although they offered little attacking threat, Kendal made themselves far more compact and difficult to break down. However, the points were eventually secured by the Pesky Bulls deep into added time at the end of the game in a move that was started and finished by substitute Aaron Fleming. After exchanging passes with Monaghan, Fleming found fellow substitute Alex McMilan who duly slid the ball to Hamilton. Hamilton seemed to have all the time in the world to lift the ball over to the unmarked Fleming who was able to side foot a volley into an empty net. Two nil, three points.
