Three goals in added time put the gloss on a superb performance from Prescot Cables as they progressed to the Second Qualifying Round of this season’s Emirates FA Cup, eventually running out 4-0 victors over Sunderland RCA on Tuesday night.
A goalless first half saw Cables have to weather an aerial bombardment as the home side looked to take advantage of the slope they were kicking down and their giant of a centre forward. Cables were fortunate not to go a goal down just after the half-hour when after another period of sustained pressure, Sunderland hit the post with a lovely curling shot which subsequently bounced clear and away from danger.
It could be argued that Cables finished the half in the ascendancy after creating a couple of chances through the excellent Matty Hamilton and good centre forward play from Dale Korie-Butler.
The second half saw Cables take control of the game as they sought to take advantage of both the slope and the breeze that was now in their favour.
It took 9 minutes of the second period for the Pesky Bulls to take the lead and once again it was Matty Hamilton who was the architect. Receiving an excellent cross field from Aaron Fleming, Hamilton beat his full back and was able to get to the byline before cutting the ball back to MJ Monaghan who was able to slide in and apply the finish. It was 1-0 to Cables and very well deserved.
Cables then missed several chances to extend their lead as Monaghan, Korie-Butler, Hamilton and substitute Alex McMilan all spurned good opportunities to score.
As the home side sensed that they had perhaps weathered the Cables storm, Mitchell Allen produced a number of excellent saves to keep Sunderland at bay. In the final minutes, having conceded a free kick at the edge of the area, Allen got down low and across to tip an excellent effort around his post.
On 90 minutes, and still under pressure, Matty Hamilton was able to break away and release Matthew Corness who cut inside and unleashed a fierce shot that beat the keeper at his neat post and found the bottom corner. 2-0.
A two goal lead very quickly became three. This time, Louis White fired home an excellent volley from fully 25 yards out into the Sunderland goal. Tie over. Name in the hat.
There was, however, still time for Hamilton to cap an excellent performance with a goal of his own as he cut in from the left and curled a shot that found the back of the net. Icing on top of the cake.
Cables XI: Allen, Edgerton, Johnstone, McCulloch, Cooper, White, Jackson ( Myler 55), Fleming , Monaghan (McMilan 67), Hamilton, Korie-Butler ( Corness 87)
