Cables were beaten away from home for the second time in a week as they went down 2-1 at Ramsbottom United on Saturday afternoon.
New signing Ben Cartwright came into the team to play alongside James Cooper in central defence, with skipper James McCulloch moving into central midfield. Aaron Fleming also came into the side in place of Michael Monaghan.
Ramsbottom have been one of the in-form sides during the early weeks of the season and wasted no time in demonstrating why they are at the top end of the table, taking the lead on 11 minutes. After failing to deal with a cross into the box twice, the ball fell to Tony Donaldson who fired home to put the Rams in front.
Going behind early allowed Cables to come out of their shells a bit more and for the remainder of the half the visitors were arguably the better side. Jamie Rainford and Matty Hamilton both put efforts wide before Cables eventually drew level in the 33rd minute.
Mitchell Allen played the ball out to Rodrigo Schmitdinger who in turn found Sean Myler. Myler’s whipped cross found the onrushing Rainford who was able to slide the ball into the net. One all, and no more than the Pesky Bulls deserved.
The second half was more of the same as both sides created chances. Mitch Allen once again made some fine saves, while Rainford also had two chances to give Cables the lead.
Any momentum Cables had built up was killed with 18 minutes left when Rodrigo Schmitdinger was shown a straight red card following an altercation. Being down to ten men for the second time in a week eventually took its toll on Cables; they were unable to keep the hosts out and claim what would have been a hard-earned point. With 4 minutes remaining, a ball inside the left full-back position found Rams right back Kyle Harrison who was able to fire past Allen, restoring the home side’s lead.
Cables were able to create one final chance right on 90 minutes when Louis White’s cross was spilled by the home ‘keeper but Lloyd Dean was unable to tap home as the home side held on for all three points.
